Critical Incident Stress Counselling

Workplaces sometimes experience sudden, overwhelming, threatening or protracted events that may be caused by:

  • Assault
  • A threat
  • Severe Injury
  • Death
  • Fire

Having a Critical Incident Stress Management plan in place can help to mitigate the negative outcome that can often result.

A part of this is to engage a counsellor to work one on one with workers for counselling sessions and provide follow up support.

Some workers are adversely affected by critical incidents and others are able to process them adequately in their own way.  There is no way to know beforehand who will or will not be affected as each person is different and can react to each critical incident in different ways.

Exposure to a critical incident may be threatening and cause distress.  It can lead to a stress response, which may be emotional and/or physical, and harmful particularly in a work environment.

It can cause a decline in work performance, relationships, and overall levels of wellbeing.

Workers involved in abnormal workplace incidents may experience:
  • Recurrent thoughts about the event
  • Feeling uneasy or anxious
  • Experience mood changes
  • Restlessness
  • Tiredness
  • Disturbed sleep

Critical Incident Stress Counselling is a proven technique and can help workers to process abnormal workplace events in a constructive manner, returning their lives to normal and getting them back to work sooner.
